{i} Note: If you found the bug while using one of the Ubuntu family, follow our guide ReportingUbuntuBugs.

Step 1: Visit https://launchpad.net.

Step 2: Enter the name of the software where you found the bug, in the Search for products text-box, then click Search.

Step 3: Launchpad will show you a list of software products that match the name you entered. Click the name of the product that most closely resembles the software you were using. If Launchpad doesn't return any search results, try again using only part of the software's name (e.g. office, rather than OpenOffice.org).

Step 4: Click Bugs in the second box in the left-hand menu.

Step 5: Click Report a bug in the left-hand menu.

Step 6: Enter a brief summary of the bug you've found. Example: Program X crashes when editing multiple documents. Then click Continue.

Launchpad will search existing bugs and show you a list of bugs that appear similar to the one you've reported. You'll also see a list of the bugs that people report most often.

Check the bugs that Launchpad lists. If one appears to be the same as the problem you encountered, click it, see our article AddingCommentsToExistingBugs.

Step 7: If you don't see a similar bug in the list that Launchpad shows you, scroll down and you'll see your summary, along with a larger text box. Enter as much information as you can about the bug. Useful information includes:

  • What the software did to make you think a bug had occurred.
  • Exactly what you were doing when the bug happened - describe what someone else would have to do to see the bug.
  • Any error messages or anything else that you saw.

{i} Quick-tip: You can learn what information is most useful in the article [http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html How to report bugs effectively].

Step 8: When you've given as much relevant information as possible, click the Submit Bug Report button.

Launchpad will now email the software product's bug team, to let them know that you've created a bug. They'll review it and may email you to ask for more information. Whenever your bug report is updated, Launchpad will email you to keep you up to date.
